Top or bottom mount, side-by-side freezers or built in units, these are just a few of the refrigerators choices on the market today.

The first consideration when purchasing a new refrigerator is to look for an Energy Star rating with an Energy Guide label showing the annual, estimated cost of operation. The government of Ontario is currently canceling the provincial sales tax on refrigerator freezer purchases with an Energy Star rating.

What Size Refrigerator to Buy?

According to myhomeideas web site, the recommended capacity of a refrigerator is eight to ten cubic feet of space for a family of two. Add one cubic foot for each additional member of the family. But interior space is dependent on the food preparation and buying habits of each individual family. When replacing an old refrigerator, be sure to measure to ensure the new appliance will fit into the old space.

Bottom mount freezers allow easier access to frozen items and put items in the fridge at a convenient eye level. The freezers compartments have either a pull out drawer or regular hinged door. Top mount freezers have been around since the beginning and are cheaper to buy and more energy efficient. Side by side freezers have smaller doors and are deeper making items at the back harder to reach.

Extra Features Add to Cost

Bottom mount and side by side refrigerators tend to be more expensive. Built in refrigeration units are designed to match kitchen cabinets and this adds to the cost. These fridges also use more energy. Added features like ice and water dispensers add to both the cost and the energy use.

Most new refrigerator freezers come with a one-year Limited Warranty, usually good for one year from the date of purchase. This warranty only covers factory defects in materials and workmanship. Appliance retailers offer Extended Warranties, which are good for three to five years, after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired. The decision to purchase this warranty is dependent on the consumer’s confidence in the product.

Whether designing a new kitchen or replacing a worn out fridge, the variety of sizes, colors and finishes of the new refrigerators are sure to compliment any kitchen design. Many people like the professional look of stainless steel appliances. White refrigerators are still the most common choice and come in textured or smooth finishes for easy cleaning.

Buying a new refrigerator is an expensive process, here are some tips to make it a little easier:

  • Check online manufacturer’s sites and consumer reviews for information about refrigerator freezers

  • Read comparison studies done by Consumer Reports paying special attention to frequency and cost of refrigerator repairs.

  • Make a list of the appliance dealers in the area and do price comparisons. Last years model may be cheaper and offer the same warranty

  • Look into after sales service. Retailers who specialize in selling only large appliances generally service what they sell. Other stores selling appliances generally contract out repairs or refer to the manufacturer.

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the product’s history and reliability

  • Ask about removal costs for your old refrigerator. Some stores charge a delivery fee and a removal fee.
