During a financial crisis, it is prudent to have a sensibly designed house. Find tips on how to stay practical in the next design project.

In these financially stringent times sensible interior designing is called for. Impracticality in the basic design can prove costly since things will constantly have to be changed and redone to make them more viable.

Here are a few guidelines for the prudent designer.

Want vs. Need

It is best to keep a tight check on the growing list of Wants until all the Needs have been met. Most of the items yearned for are frill coverings that can added on once the basics are in place. If a kitchen is to be designed it is sensible to budget for the best quality equipment- micro, oven, chimney, etc. instead of spending on the coveted travertine flooring at first go.

Making a list of essentials before hand will help.

Functionality

Themes and styles are important in design but they should never compromise on functionality. A regal looking four poster bed would fit perfectly into a Tudor room, but then without storage drawers underneath all the extra blankets and linen will be left out and have to stored elsewhere. This inefficiency results in higher cost.

Each created space should have a specific use, only then will it be well maintained. Take a castle shaped bed with a fake turret which gathers dust and cob webs because it has no use, unless it is converted into a small book shelf.

Durability of Materials

Using flimsy, temporary materials to incorporate a theme can prove costly in the long run. Decorative materials that are simply stuck on can not stand wear and tear especially in a house with children. They will have to be replaced within a year or two.

It is wiser to invest in long lasting materials or those that can be easily restored to their original form. E.g. washable paint is a better choice since it can be cleaned avoiding the hassle of repainting, a granite counter top in the kitchen will last longer than a laminated top, etc.

Flexibility in Design

A home needs to change with its residents. A rigidly planned house, such as one with lots of built in furniture will have to be ripped apart every time there is a need to modify or renovate. Prefer individual pieces that can shifted around and mixed-and-matched for an eclectic look. That way a study can easily be converted to a nursery and back! Furniture pieces should be picked for their durability first, style can be secondary. A sturdy table can be repainted and stenciled to fit the theme of the day. This will be cheaper than buying a new one.

These practical tips can strengthen the basic design of a home. This will make its upkeep and maintenance lighter on the pocket. It will remain functional longer and will be easier to alter. The current economy demands a prudent designer.
